Week beginning 25th November 2024
The Little Mermaid
This week, our traditional tale was The Little Mermaid, a story requested by the children through pupil voice. In our writing area, we have been crafting letters in a bottle to Ariel, describing all the incredible things we’ve imagined under the sea. In the creative area, we’ve been making beautiful under the sea pictures using mixed media. The children have been practising their cutting skills and experimenting with adding different textures to bring their artwork to life. Our small world area has been a hub of storytelling excitement! The children have re-enacted scenes from the story using props, letting their imaginations take them on adventures beneath the waves. Building on last week’s tally chart learning, we asked our friends to vote for their favourite sea creature, showing great enthusiasm for data collection and teamwork. In maths, we began learning about partitioning through the song Five Little Speckled Frogs. We explored how the frogs that stayed on the log and the ones that jumped into the pond were different parts that still made up 5 altogether. Following this, we experimented with a variety of maths equipment to practise partitioning before solving problems in our maths books. In our inquiry sessions, we’ve been writing ‘About the Author’ blurbs to include in our traditional tale books. We shared interesting facts about ourselves to help future readers get to know us as authors. Our Reception children also re-told their stories using their story maps, which inspired their friends to write thoughtful book reviews. Unsurprisingly with our creativity and imagination, our stories received glowing 5-star ratings! We’re excited to share all our hard work during next week’s Jump Out session!
