Mr. Griffiths' Blog – Another Busy Week at Llangan!

What a whirlwind week it’s been at Llangan, packed with activities, learning, and a touch of fun! Let’s take a look at some highlights..

Harvest Delivery and Food Bank Visit
On Monday, our School Council delivered the generous donations from our Harvest collection to the Llantwit Food Bank. The children had the chance to see firsthand how the volunteers manage and distribute the food, and they even helped with labelling items—proving to be very handy helpers!

A huge thank you to everyone in our community for the incredible generosity. The donations were nothing short of amazing, and it was heartwarming to see our pupils playing a role in giving back.

Celebrating Diwrnod Shwmae

Wednesday saw the whole school turn a shade of red as we celebrated Diwrnod Shwmae. This brilliant day encourages everyone, from fluent speakers to beginners, to give Welsh a go and connect with our rich heritage. With a few “Shwmae-s”  flying around the playground, it was a lovely way for our pupils to immerse themselves in Welsh culture and feel proud of our language. Da iawn, pawb! Let’s keep those Welsh phrases flowing!

Road Safety in Action
Road safety has been a big focus this week. Our Year 6 pupils completed their National Standards Cycling Course, starting off in the safety of our playground before braving the roads of Timbers Green housing estate to put their new skills to the test. We’ve got some future Tour de France riders in our midst! Not to be outdone, Year 2 pupils took part in the Kerbcraft initiative, learning all about staying safe as pedestrians. They’ve become experts in crossing roads safely (and giving cars a cautious eye).

Show Racism the Red Card
Friday marked Show Racism the Red Card Day, a vital national event aimed at raising awareness and promoting equality. As part of our commitment to fostering an anti-racist curriculum, our pupils wrote Haikus reflecting their dreams for a racism-free school. The poetry was both powerful and moving—a testament to how thoughtful and kind-hearted our pupils are when it comes to ensuring everyone feels respected and valued.

Pumpkin Carving Fun
Thursday afternoon saw pumpkins galore, thanks to the PTA and some generous donations from Penllyn Estate and the PTA team. Our pupils got their creative juices flowing, and the Head Pupils had the tough job of picking the winning designs. The carved pumpkins will light up the hall during the Halloween Disco next week—watch out for some spooky (and very impressive!) creations!

Playground Pals Training
Also on Friday, our Year 6 Prefects became Playground Pals with the help of Ffion from Bullies Out. This training has equipped our Prefects with key skills in leadership, communication, and conflict resolution, making them brilliant role models during playtime. They’re ready to ensure everyone feels included and has fun, especially those who might need a little extra support. The Playground Pals are here to create a friendlier, more fun playground for all. Hats off to them!

Looking Ahead
Next week, we look forward to welcoming you for Parents' Evenings on Tuesday and Thursday. If you haven’t booked yet, there’s still time—log into the Parent Portal before Monday at 3:30 pm! You’ll have a chance to hear about your child’s progress, view their work, and chat about their wellbeing.

Don’t forget, the Halloween Disco is on Wednesday, 5:00–6:30 pm in the hall. Tickets are available via Parent Pay—get your dancing shoes ready! On the same day, our Criw Cymraeg will lead us as we aim for the Cymraeg Campus Silver Award—fingers crossed! And finally, a reminder that Friday is the last day before half-term, with pupils returning on Tuesday, 5th November (after a well-deserved INSET day for staff on Monday).

Here’s to another fantastic week ahead!

Warmest wishes,
Mr. Griffiths
