We extend our sincerest apologies for the absence of last week's newsletter. The recent period has been exceptionally busy, both within the school and for myself personally, having participated in the London Marathon last week. I am immensely grateful for the overwhelming support received from family members, staff, and students alike.

The Smarty Challenge within the school raised an impressive £350. Moreover, through various contributions, I am delighted to share that a total of £3,504 has been raised for the NSPCC. We extend heartfelt appreciation to all who offered well wishes and to the parents who generously sponsored me. Diolch o galon.

Exciting developments have taken place within the school over the past fortnight. Children in Years 2-5 had the pleasure of collaborating with Jenny Lambert, a local artist, on a remarkable piece of artwork commemorating the renovation of our historic building. This masterpiece will be proudly displayed in the school's dining hall.

Featuring prominently in the artwork is our venerable old building, emblazoned with the school's name and our motto, 'Dring Y Uchel, Dring Yn Uwch' (Climb High, Climb Higher), alongside the school's founding year of 911. Additionally, the painting depicts notable landmarks from Cowbridge at the bottom and the scenic sea views of Porthcawl at the top, symbolising our school's picturesque location nestled amidst the rural Vale of Glamorgan. The composition also includes rolling hills, verdant fields, a quintessential tractor, our school's polytunnel, vibrant flora, and fauna, all emblematic of our rural setting. Notably, the children have incorporated the school's logo, and eagle-eyed viewers may spot Jenny Lambert's signature addition: her loyal canine companion.

We extend our profound gratitude to the PTA for their generous funding of this project, ensuring that future generations of pupils will have the opportunity to appreciate this splendid artwork. While Year 6 pupils did not partake in this project, they eagerly anticipate an upcoming workshop with Jenny Lambert as part of their school-leavers' project.

Last week, our staff engaged in a training session led by Mrs Shubnam Aziz, an advisor on equalities and humanities from the Central South Consortium, our regional school improvement service. The school is committed to enhancing its understanding of equality and is actively transforming its curriculum from being non-racist to anti-racist.

This week, Year 6 embarked on their residential trip to the Urdd Centre at Llangrannog. The Urdd is a youth movement advocating for Welsh language and culture across Wales.

During their stay, the children honed essential teamwork, independence, and problem-solving skills through a plethora of adventurous activities. Moreover, this excursion provided an invaluable opportunity for Year 6 pupils to forge bonds with their counterparts from Llansannor and Y Bontfaen Primary Schools, facilitating a smoother transition to high school. Activities ranged from low and high ropes courses to quad biking, horse riding, trampolining, swimming, skiing, tobogganing, go-karting, archery, team building, and a cliff walk—all set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Ceredigion coastline.

We are immensely proud of the children's exemplary conduct, which garnered praise from staff at the centre and fellow schools. This experience allowed them to cultivate friendships, independence, and personal growth—a testament to the transformative power of such outings. Our heartfelt thanks go to Mr Howles and Mrs Powling for their exceptional leadership during this trip.

On Friday, Mrs Haseena Meunier graced our school with her presence to enlighten the children about Ramadan and Eid, sharing insights into the significance of fasting and the cherished traditions of communal gatherings. Mrs Meunier's engaging session, complete with a lively dance performance, was not only educational but also deeply enriching. We express our gratitude to her for her generosity, including sharing sweets and desserts with the children. Eid Mubarak to all celebrating this joyous occasion.

In staffing updates, we bid farewell to Mrs Meek from the school kitchen, as she moves on to new endeavors. We welcome Mr Houghton, who joins us as our new school cook under the auspices of Big Fresh, an independent catering company contracted by the Vale of Glamorgan. Additionally, Mrs Hill, a dedicated parent and longstanding kitchen assistant, has transitioned to a new role as a midday supervisor within the school community. Furthermore, we extend our warmest wishes to Mrs Janet Day, who retires on Tuesday, 30th April, after 14 years of dedicated service to our school. We are profoundly grateful for her unwavering commitment and hard work over the years. Additionally, as previously shared, Mr Sinnett, our esteemed Deputy Headteacher, has resigned, prompting the commencement of the search for a new Deputy Headteacher, with interviews scheduled to be conducted by the Governing Body in the ensuing weeks.

Looking ahead, members of the School Council and Eco Owl have been extended the honour of visiting the Houses of Parliament next week. This invaluable opportunity will afford the children a firsthand glimpse into the workings of our democratic system.
