Week Beginning 18th November 2024
Tales, Towers, and Terrific Shapes
This week in Nursery and Reception, we’ve continued exploring traditional tales through a variety of challenging and engaging activities. Our Welsh challenge focused on describing the emotions of the Seven Dwarves using Welsh sentence patterns. In the creative area, we created 3D maps to help Hansel and Gretel find their way home. We practised our knowledge of positional language to help them understand their route. Our construction area challenge was to rescue Rapunzel from her tower; we drew and labelled plans of structures we built to reach her and used measuring tapes to test whether our structures were tall enough. During our maths sessions, we continued learning about 2D and 3D shapes, focusing on their properties, including how many faces, vertices and edges each shape has. We applied this knowledge by helping Miss Hughes sort a variety of differently shaped objects, explaining our reasoning as we worked. We also went on an outdoor shape hunt with Mrs Stevens completing tally charts to record how many 2D and 3D shapes we found around our school. During literacy sessions, we have been creating story maps based on the traditional tales we have written. The children demonstrated excellent perseverance and determination as they utilised their knowledge of ‘Fred Talk’ to sound out and spell keywords on their maps.
