Week Beginning 14th October 2024
The Princess and the Pea
This week in Dosbarth Pili-Pala, our enhanced challenges have been inspired by the traditional tale The Princess and the Pea. The children have been busy independently writing invitations for a royal ball, created mixed media castles and retold the classic tale in their own words using props and adding in new characters to enhance the story. The children have built castles in the construction area, writing their plans beforehand and adding features of a real castle. Building upon prior knowledge of comparing size and length from last week, the children had the challenge of making peas in a pod using play dough. Utilising unifix, the children used non-standard units of measurement to measure their peas. Our Dring Yn Uwch (climb higher) challenge was to then use a ruler to measure their peas in centimetres.
In maths, we have been investigating capacity as well as looking at pattern. In literacy, we have been sequencing our fruit kebab, labelling each step. Using Read, Write, Inc sound mats, the children practised spelling “bossy” verbs, growing their independence in writing. In our inquiry sessions, we have started planning our own stories, where the children will become authors of their very own traditional tale. This week, we started looking at main characters, thinking of adjectives to describe them.
We have explored the beauty of diversity by reading ‘The Colour of Us’ by Karen Katz. The children examined books featuring people from various cultures and discussed the differences they noticed. We then discussed the many similarities that connect us all, reinforcing the message that despite differences, we are all unique and equally important. Together, we celebrated how diversity makes our world richer and more beautiful.
