Dear Parents and Guardians,

I hope this newsletter finds you well and that the new year has started off on a positive note for you and your families. I would like to take this opportunity to share some exciting news and updates from Llangan Primary School.

Staffing

Firstly, I am delighted to announce that Miss Llewellyn, our acting deputy headteacher, is expecting a baby and will be commencing her maternity leave during the Easter holiday. We wish her all the best during this joyous occasion and look forward to welcoming her back in the future. To ensure a smooth transition during her absence, the governing body is working closely with the local authority to find a suitable cover for her position.

In line with this, our school is currently searching for a deputy headteacher to fulfil this role through a secondment opportunity for a senior leader from another school within the local authority. Initially, the position will be available for one term, as Mr. Marc Sinnett, our substantive Deputy Headteacher, is expected to return to his role in September 2024, following the conclusion of his secondment at St. David’s CIW Primary, Colwinston. I will keep you informed about the progress of the appointment process to cover Miss Llewellyn’s maternity leave.

Bronze Rights Respecting School Award Achievement

Next, I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to the School Council for achieving the Rights Respecting School Bronze Award. Over the past 18 months, they have worked tirelessly towards this goal, and their hard work has paid off. I would also like to express my gratitude to Miss Llewellyn, who leads the committee. The award aims to improve the lives of children in the UK by prioritising children’s rights in school policy and practice, aligning with Llangan’s school values. This achievement reflects our commitment to creating active and engaged citizens, ensuring a safe and supportive environment, and promoting respectful relationships amongst peers and adults. Child Rights Education, through RRSA, not only benefits the children but also strengthens our overall school practices and relationships. It is our belief that when children leave Llangan Primary School, they are well-prepared to embrace life as a fantastic adventure.

Old Building Renovation

Furthermore, I am thrilled to inform you that the Vale of Glamorgan Council has secured funding for the renovation of our original Edwardian School building. This historic building, constructed in 1911, has not undergone major renovations in a very long time. While the work was initially scheduled for last summer, it has been delayed and will now commence in the week beginning the 19th of January. The renovation will include the dinner hall, classrooms, library, and conference room, ensuring that the building is suitable for 21st-century education while preserving its integrity and original features. The improvements will encompass redecoration, new heating systems, better inclusive access, improved acoustics, and lighting. The renovation is expected to take three weeks and will be completed during the February half-term holiday. We have been working closely with the Local Authority and contractors to carefully plan these works in order to minimise disruption to school life. Any changes to the routine will be communicated to parents and pupils once they are confirmed. As an example, our Year 6 pupils have temporarily moved to another classroom in preparation for these renovations.

PTA Events

Lastly, I would like to highlight two upcoming events organised by our dedicated Parent Teacher Association (PTA). On Thursday, the 25th of January, the PTA will be hosting a Santes Dwynwen Day Party from 3:30 pm to 5 pm. Santes Dwynwen is the Welsh Patron Saint of Love, and this event promises to be a delightful celebration. There will be balloons, games, music, crafts, and Disney short films for the children to enjoy. Cakes, crisps, sweets, and drinks will be provided, and the cost of the event is £5, payable through ParentPay. We encourage as many of our pupils as possible to attend this special occasion.

Additionally, the PTA and our Eco Owls are teaming up to collect preloved children’s costumes for World Book Day, which will take place on Thursday, the 7th of March. If you have any children’s costumes that are no longer used or have been outgrown, we kindly request that you consider donating them. These preloved costumes will be sold at affordable prices, with all proceeds going towards the development of our school playground. Donations can be dropped off at the school by the 31st of January, and the pop-up shop will take place during the last week of this term.
